MUCH works alongside the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago and national child protection agencies to ensure vulnerable children receive care, protection, and support within a safe environment.

Working Together for Child Welfare
The Mothers’ Union Children’s Home collaborates with the Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago and other national agencies to provide temporary accommodation and care for vulnerable children in need of support and protection.
This partnership helps ensure children receive safe care, oversight, and access to appropriate services.

The Children's Authority of Trinidad and Tobago
The Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago was established through legislation designed to promote and protect the rights and welfare of children in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
The Authority plays a critical role in safeguarding vulnerable children through protective services, care systems, monitoring, and oversight.

The Foundation of the Children’s Authority
The Children’s Authority of Trinidad and Tobago was established through legislation designed to promote and protect the rights and welfare of children in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).
The Authority was created as part of a comprehensive package of children’s legislation aimed at strengthening child protection systems and ensuring the safety, dignity, and well-being of vulnerable children throughout Trinidad and Tobago.
Its guiding principles are rooted in respect for children’s rights, protection from harm, and the provision of appropriate care and support services.
Core Mandate and Responsibilities
The mandate of the Children’s Authority is derived directly from legislation and includes responsibilities related to child protection, care, monitoring, and support services.
The Authority is responsible for:
• Receiving and investigating reports of child mistreatment
• Supporting the protection and placement of children
• Monitoring child care facilities and residences
• Supporting foster care and adoption systems
• Maintaining standards for child welfare services
• Assisting in safeguarding vulnerable children
These responsibilities contribute to a coordinated national child protection framework.
Child Protection Services
The Children’s Authority plays an important role in responding to reports concerning the mistreatment, neglect, abuse, or exploitation of children.
The organization works alongside relevant agencies and the Court system to ensure children receive appropriate protection, intervention, and care where necessary.
This includes:
• Investigating reports of mistreatment
• Coordinating protective services
• Facilitating emergency support
• Assisting with placement and care arrangements
• Supporting vulnerable children and families
The Authority’s work seeks to prioritise the best interests and safety of every child.
Foster Care and Community Residences
The Children’s Authority is responsible for establishing and monitoring systems that support children requiring alternative care arrangements.
This includes:
• Establishing and operating foster care systems
• Monitoring foster care providers
• Licensing and monitoring community residences
• Supporting standards for nurseries and child care facilities
• Promoting safe and nurturing environments for children
These systems help ensure children receive care within environments that support their development, stability, and well-being.
Youth Justice and Support Systems
The Authority also supports aspects of the youth justice system and collaborates with agencies that provide services for vulnerable children and young persons.
Its responsibilities include:
• Supporting rehabilitation and welfare services
• Assisting with youth justice initiatives
• Collaborating with social service agencies
• Providing assistance in matters involving child victims
• Promoting safeguarding and protection measures
The overall goal is to support positive outcomes and appropriate interventions for children in need of guidance and protection.
Record Keeping and Monitoring
The Children’s Authority maintains records and monitoring systems to support accountability, oversight, and quality standards within child protection services.
